The agreement, signed by the mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, and the rector of the UMA, Teodomiro López, aims to boost present and future archaeological work in the city. The mayor emphasized that the study will provide "many clues" and considered it positive that "everything that involves caring for Málaga and working with the University".
The agreement, with an initial duration of one year extendable up to four more, is part of the municipal strategy for heritage protection. One of the priority research lines will be the Cerro del Villar, a Phoenician site considered one of the most important in the southern Iberian Peninsula and the western Mediterranean. The results of this research, which involves the universities of Chicago and Marburg, will be presented at an international congress in Malta.
Additionally, non-invasive archaeological surveys will continue on the northwest slope of the Alcazaba and the Cerro de la Tortuga. Both parties also commit to organizing joint activities such as courses, seminars, conferences, and scientific-technical and training sessions.
