The celebration, which the provincial institution organizes annually, brought together various collaborating entities such as the Málaga Academy of Sciences, the Ateneo de Málaga, and the Economic Society of Friends of the Country. This event underscores the relevance of a united Europe as a guarantee of stability and progress.
The institutional program began the previous day with a meeting at the Málaga City Council, where consular representatives and students from Ricardo León school highlighted Europe's role as a space for coexistence, democracy, and international cooperation. The Provincial Council aims to strengthen the idea of a united Europe and consolidate the values of peace and cooperation among peoples.
The 2026 commemoration holds special significance as it marks 40 years since the accession of Spain and Portugal to the then European Economic Community (EEC), a milestone considered fundamental for the economic, social, and democratic development of both countries. This year also commemorates 40 years of the first official Europe Day celebrations and the public use of the European Union flag and anthem.
“"They have helped us a lot with the setup and logistics of this event."
The main event featured an address by the president of the Provincial Council, who thanked all the departments and institutions involved, including the Government Subdelegation and the Málaga Superior Conservatory of Music. The day concluded with a performance of the Ode to Joy by the choir of the Málaga Superior Conservatory of Music, directed by a professor, providing a musical finale to the celebration.
Europe Day, celebrated every May 9, commemorates the Schuman Declaration of 1950, which laid the foundations for the European cooperation project after World War II. This declaration promoted collaboration between countries to prevent conflicts and build a new era of peace, integration, and cooperation. Currently, the date also serves to uphold democratic values, human rights, and solidarity among member states.
