The Seville-born defender concludes his time at the Martiricos club after a season in which he was part of the team that achieved promotion to the First Division. With this departure, Montero becomes the third official exit confirmed for the summer, joining Jokin Gabilondo and Víctor García.
This decision is part of the sporting plan led by Loren Juarros for the team's return to the top flight. The sporting direction considers it a priority to strengthen the defense with a center-back possessing greater experience in the First Division. Montero arrived last summer on a one-year contract with an optional second year, conditional on playing a certain number of matches, a clause he ultimately did not meet, leaving his continuity in the club's hands.
Despite an inconsistent start to the season in terms of playing time, the player eventually secured a place in the starting lineup and was an important figure in the final stages of the championship. Montero bids farewell to the club at 27 years old, having played 30 official matches, scored one goal, and been part of the team that secured Málaga CF's return to the First Division in Almería.
The center-back joined Málaga Club de Fútbol in August 2025, arriving from Real Racing Club de Santander, to reinforce the left-central defensive line. During his year with the club, he played a total of 30 games across all competitions: 25 in LALIGA HYPERMOTION (23 as a starter, with one goal), one in the Copa del Rey, and four in the promotion playoff to LALIGA EA SPORTS.
“"His defensive contribution on the field and his presence in the locker room have been highly valuable to the team, contributing to the achievement of the recent and historic promotion to the First Division in the 25/26 season."
Málaga CF has extended its best wishes for Javi Montero's future sporting and personal endeavors, thanking him for his work and professionalism during his time with the entity.
