The operation, named “Cover”, has exposed a massive irregular disposal of construction waste across various locations in the Province of Málaga. Among the materials dumped, asbestos was identified, a highly hazardous component for both health and the environment, requiring strict control measures for its management.
The investigated parties, allegedly linked to the construction and earthmoving sectors, are believed to have bypassed legal procedures for waste management. Instead of transporting the waste to authorized treatment plants, they allegedly used rural plots in the Axarquía region as illegal landfills.
“"This practice would have allowed those involved to avoid the economic costs associated with the regulated treatment of these materials."
The consequences of improper waste management extend beyond visual impact or administrative infractions. They include serious risks to the environment and public health, such as potential fires from flammable material accumulation, contamination of aquifers by toxic filtrations, and especially, the danger of harmful fiber emission when handling asbestos cement incorrectly.
The investigated individuals are accused of an environmental crime. The corresponding proceedings have been forwarded to the Málaga Environmental Prosecutor's Office for further legal action.
