The UGT and CCOO unions chose Málaga for their main rally, under the slogan «salaries, housing, and democracy». This decision was based on the highly strained real estate market in the city, a topic that the Second Vice President of the Government and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, took the opportunity to address.
“"We will try again to push through the extension of rental agreements."
The minister emphasized that the measure would return to the Lower House, after having been previously rejected, with the aim of «protecting working people» and «thousands of humble individuals». She stressed that the Government would not abandon this initiative, reiterating its commitment.
Díaz also criticized the «exorbitant» housing prices in Málaga, reaching 3,720 euros per square meter, calling it a «record» and pointing to a structural problem. She denounced that «vulture funds are getting rich» and that they concentrate properties that should be available for rent to workers.
“"We want better and higher wages."
In the economic sphere, the minister called on employers to ensure that collective bargaining serves to «distribute profits and raise wages». She noted that Spain has a negative wage differential of 25% compared to Europe, which, in her view, justifies the need for pay increases. Additionally, she defended new labor reforms underway, such as the Trainee Statute and the Occupational Risk Prevention Law.
Joining Díaz's demands was the former Minister of Finance and PSOE candidate for the Junta de Andalucía, María Jesús Montero, who also highlighted the housing problem. Montero warned that housing has become a «luxury good unaffordable for many people, especially young people», and used the opportunity to deliver an electoral message ahead of the upcoming regional elections.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Housing, Isabel Rodríguez, speaking from the regional demonstration in Puertollano, also addressed the Andalusian electorate, stating that the right to housing is also being voted on in the elections. She emphasized the importance of the May 17 election to change course towards a government that truly addresses this right.
