This approval, reported by the Andalusian Government, allows for the tender process to begin for the renovation of the historic monastery and its surroundings. The project includes a comprehensive study of the property, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1980 and later a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), analyzing its cultural values, current condition, and proposed interventions.
According to the commission's report, the proposed actions are compatible with the restoration and conservation of the convent, respecting its constructive tradition. It has been confirmed that the elements to be remodeled or removed correspond to the last intervention carried out in 2013.
For the detailed execution project, the original materials of the convent, such as stone, bricks, and mortars, have been characterized, addressing previous observations from the Provincial Historical Heritage Commission.
The project, which also covers the surroundings of the monastery built between the 15th and 16th centuries, proposes the restoration and enhancement of the original building. This will house exhibition halls and multipurpose spaces for performing arts, music, and literary activities, organized around the cloister and the church.
Additionally, a new semi-buried building will be constructed to connect the convent with the Provincial Historical Archive of Málaga, also a BIC. This underground space will house the Intermediate Provincial Archive, the first of its kind to open in Andalusia.
The surrounding public space will be designed to evoke the convent's old orchard, with a garden and medicinal garden at the cultural center's entrance, and seasonal orchard species in the northern area, linking to the site's agricultural history.
