The Malaga City Council has demanded that the property owner of the Hotel ibis Málaga Centro Ciudad implement several safety measures after the fire that occurred in the early hours of May 25th. The Municipal Urban Planning Department (GMU), in collaboration with the Fire Brigade, has conducted a technical inspection of the accessible areas of the building to assess the structure's condition and ensure the exterior's safety.
According to the municipal report, the fire is controlled and practically extinguished, although firefighting efforts continued in two areas on the top floor during the visit. Required actions include fencing off the building's perimeter to prevent materials from falling onto public pathways and boarding up facade openings to deter unauthorized access.
Furthermore, the property has been asked to maintain constant surveillance of the building until its complete closure is ensured, preventing both third-party access and potential vandalism. Once these measures are completed, the owner must notify the GMU and submit the final work certificate.
Municipal technicians have identified localized bulges in the facades, caused by the expansion of the brickwork, posing a risk of detachment. Consequently, debris removal from the ground floor in the southern part of the building and progressive structural shoring during cleaning operations have also been ordered.
In the inspection of the northern area, no structural damage was observed in the basement. However, a partial collapse of a floor slab on the first floor, near the structural joint, was confirmed. Damage to finishes and installations was detected in other visited areas, although the overall structure does not appear unstable.
Regarding the southern zone, technicians could only access the ground floor due to accumulated debris from the fire. Nevertheless, the report indicates that the structure seems to have withstood the event thanks to its fire-protective coatings.
