The DGT has highlighted a common behavior on Andalusian highways and throughout the country: remaining in the left lane after completing an overtaking maneuver. This action, considered a serious infraction, violates the General Traffic Regulations and can create hazardous situations.
According to regulations, drivers must return to the right lane "as soon as possible and gradually" after overtaking. This maneuver must be performed with signaling and without forcing other vehicles to change their trajectory or speed, always using turn signals to indicate the lane change and prevent potential accidents.
“"Do not change lanes more than necessary to perform an overtaking maneuver, and once completed, gradually return to the right lane."
The DGT emphasizes that on motorways and expressways, one must "always drive in the right lane." Prolonged and unjustified use of the left lane not only hinders traffic flow but can also induce other drivers to overtake on the right, a prohibited and dangerous practice that carries a 200 euro fine and the loss of four points from the driving license.
There are exceptions for left lane use, such as overtaking (with the obligation to return to the right lane), facilitating vehicle entry from the right, bypassing obstacles or stopped vehicles, or taking a left exit. Outside these scenarios, the infraction is considered serious and subject to the aforementioned financial penalty.
Monitoring of this behavior is actively carried out on Málaga's roads, both by patrols and through cameras, helicopters, and other automated means, with the aim of improving road safety and preventing traffic problems.
