The letter, published on Unicaja's website, comes after a heartfelt event where the Balkan coach was embraced by the affection of devoted fans. The commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Korac Cup not only served to remember the club's first title but also to highlight the figure of Maljkovic, who propelled Unicaja to a new dimension in continental basketball.
“"When I was presented with the Unicaja Gold Shield this Sunday, I experienced something that I have rarely felt in my long career: the weight of time transformed into gratitude."
In his letter, Maljkovic recalled his arrival in Málaga in 1999 and the mission that brought him, emphasizing that he found much more than just a basketball team. He highlighted the uniqueness of the Málaga fanbase, stating that despite having coached great clubs and won EuroLeagues, no audience compares to that of Unicaja.
The coach also expressed his thanks to Ángel Fernández Noriega, the president who trusted him almost 27 years ago and provided him with the means to build something historic, making the 2001 Korac Cup possible. He also acknowledged the work of Antonio Jesús López Nieto, the club's current president, for keeping alive the flame of what they built together and for honoring the past while building the present and working towards the future.
Finally, Maljkovic dedicated words to his players, whom he called his “warriors,” mentioning Mous Sonko, Kenny Miller, Francis Perujo, Jean Marc Jaumin, Carlos Cabezas, and Berni Rodríguez, who were present at the tribute. He concluded his letter by reaffirming his love for Málaga and his conviction that Unicaja's future will be glorious, with the Carpena shaking with excitement at every game.
