The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Antequera and its region has launched a series of activities to raise awareness about the importance of preventing and early detecting colon cancer, coinciding with World Colon Cancer Day.

The new regional head of the AECC, Ana Pérez, highlighted the association's intense activity in these first weeks, taking over from Susana Leruite. The entity emphasizes the relevance of prevention and early diagnosis of this disease, which is the most common tumor in Spain, with approximately 41,000 cases detected in 2024.
A call is made to the population aged between 50 and 69 to actively participate in screening programs, as early diagnosis can be crucial, saving the lives of up to nine out of ten patients.

As part of the “Juega tu papel” (Play Your Part) campaign, the AECC will set up information tables on Tuesday at key locations in Antequera, including the Hospital de Antequera, the Health Center, and the La Verónica Shopping Center, from 10:00 to 12:00 hours. These tables aim to inform citizens about the significance of these detection programs.
The calendar of initiatives also includes awareness-raising actions in educational centers, promoting healthy lifestyle habits from an early age through healthy breakfasts. These activities have already been carried out at IES Jacobo Orellana in Alameda and will continue at Instituto Los Colegiales next Thursday, April 9.
Among the most relevant events, an informative talk on colon cancer will be offered on April 13 at 10:30 hours at the association's headquarters, located on Cristobalina Fernández street. Healthcare professionals from the Hospital de Antequera will address essential aspects of the disease, from prevention to treatment and patient follow-up.
Finally, on April 24, at 10:00 hours, a new session will be held focusing on recovery and reintegration into daily life after overcoming an oncological process, reaffirming the association's commitment to research and comprehensive support for patients and their families.
