Those under investigation, linked to the construction and earthmoving sectors, allegedly bypassed legal controls for waste management. The operation, named 'Cover', revealed the diverse nature of the waste, including “highly dangerous” materials such as asbestos, according to a statement from the armed institution.
Their modus operandi involved using rural plots in the Axarquía region, within the province of Málaga, with the intention of converting them into illegal landfills. The primary goal was to avoid the costs associated with treating these residues at authorized facilities.
“"The improper use of waste and its lack of professional management can lead to a high risk of fires due to the accumulation of flammable materials, as well as aquifer contamination from the filtration of toxic liquids or the emission of harmful fibers in case of improper handling of fiber cement."
The individuals involved are accused of an alleged environmental crime, and the case has been handed over to the Environmental Prosecutor's Office of Málaga.
This incident follows recent precedents, such as one on January 17 in Torremolinos, where the City Council, through its Department of Environment and Health, and the Local Police, identified those responsible for an uncontrolled dump in a plot near the Cuenca de la Higuera stream. In that instance, the discarded materials included furniture, household items, clothing, textiles, and moving debris, transported in a large capacity van.
