The official ceremony for the conferral of this honor will take place on April 26 at 11:30 AM at the Auditorio Ciudad de Vera. This decision was approved by the Plenary Session of the City Council in an extraordinary session, concluding a procedure initiated last November.
The recognition highlights the exemplary life of Dr. Ramírez Soler, marked by his dedication, vocation, and professionalism in serving others. His work has significantly contributed to the city's prestige and the well-being of several generations of residents of Vera and the entire province.
“"We all know that Diego amply meets the merits, personal qualities, and exemplary trajectory required by the Ordinance of Honors and Distinctions because his figure represents the noblest values of our land: effort, service, humanity, and love for his people."
Born in Vera on January 1, 1950, Diego Ramírez Soler is a surgeon specializing in general and digestive system surgery. He trained in Granada, where he combined his medical studies with his work as a nurse and his residency. He developed much of his career at the Hospital La Inmaculada de Huércal-Overa, where he was a specialist, section chief, and founder of the Breast Unit, making it a provincial benchmark until his retirement in 2017.
A “Cum Laude” doctor, academic, and author of numerous scientific papers and books, Ramírez Soler excelled in breast pathology, contributing innovative techniques and medical training. He also actively participated in scientific associations, research projects, and teaching activities. He is the author of “Romance de Ciego,” composed in 2014, which is recited every November 9 to commemorate the anniversary of the earthquake that destroyed the ancient city of Bayra in 1518, a work that is part of Vera's intangible cultural heritage.
In addition to his medical and literary career, Dr. Ramírez Soler has shown deep involvement in the social, cultural, and religious life of the municipality. His active participation in Vera's Holy Week, especially as a member of the board of directors of the Hermandad de Jesús, is a clear example of his commitment to the traditions and values that define Vera's identity.
