In Riba de Saelices, on July 17, 2005, eleven people lost their lives while working to extinguish the fire. Two of the victims were environmental agents and nine were members of firefighting crews. The fire broke out the previous day in the Castilian-La Mancha municipality, allegedly due to a poorly extinguished barbecue.
The year 1994 holds the record for the deadliest wildfire in Spain's history, with a total of 30 fatalities. Of these, 22 died while assisting in firefighting efforts, and 8 perished after being caught by the advancing flames.
