Extreme weather conditions on that day, including temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius, low humidity, and wind gusts exceeding 50 km/h, caused the flames to exhibit virulent behavior, spreading at a speed of 128 meters per minute, four times faster than conventionally estimated. This unusual phenomenon forced emergency responders into constant adaptation amidst a changing scenario that affected several municipalities.
The fire's fury encircled dozens of homes, leading to the tragic loss of fourteen lives. Initially, thirteen bodies were found in the "ground zero" area, and days later, the figure rose to fourteen following the death of a woman with severe injuries. Of the fatalities, only one was Spanish; the rest were citizens from the United Kingdom, Belgium, the United States, and France.
Delays in activating the Emergency Plan and the decision not to use the ES-Alert mass notification system have sparked controversy and demands for explanations from the opposition and consumer organizations, who highlight the lack of homologated local emergency plans in many Andalusian municipalities.
Perceiving a lack of institutional support, affected residents have formed the "Bedar Fire Working Group" to seek solutions and prevent future tragedies, although they express feeling more supported by neighbors than by authorities.
