Last Saturday, the Plenary Hall of Turre witnessed a change in the mayoralty, with José Antonio Visiedo, from Turre para la Gente (a platform under the United Left umbrella), taking office. However, the celebration was marred by the controversial absence of representatives from IU's provincial leadership in Almería.
David Ruiz, a councilor for Turre para la Gente, publicly voiced his displeasure. Before congratulating the new mayor, Ruiz criticized the lack of presence from provincial leaders at an event he considered a milestone for the party. He noted that, despite the absence of IU's leadership, other authorities, such as the mayors of Garrucha and Zurgena, and provincial deputies, were present.
“"It pains me that there is no one from United Left here. I would like the headline to be that today the only United Left mayor in the entire province is being inaugurated."
This statement by Ruiz highlights a feeling of "abandonment" by the provincial leadership at a moment of significant success for the party in the Levante Almeriense region. The Turre group has played a prominent role in local corporations for "twelve years," which, according to Ruiz, should have been a source of pride and support from the leadership.
The councilor also referred to the 2023 agreements, where his group formed pacts with the PP in key municipalities, leading to the expulsion of some party members. Ruiz suggested that the provincial leadership should "take a look at themselves," indicating that proximity to citizens and securing votes are crucial for local power. It is worth noting that the new mayor of Turre, José Antonio Visiedo, was not a councilor in 2023, so his affiliation with United Left remained unaffected.
Beyond the internal tensions, the plenary session was marked by a strong emotional and family component. Ruiz proudly highlighted the trajectory of three generations of the Visiedo family, from the grandfather, founder of the PCE in the town, to a historic trade unionist and councilor, culminating with José Antonio, who, with only two years of prior experience, has achieved the mayoralty, which Ruiz described as "historical justice."
