According to the spokesperson for the Popular Group, the urgency to lease the Correos headquarters and relocate some 250 municipal employees to this new space is the only logical explanation for the possible sale of the main City Hall building. This action, according to the opposition, contradicts the plenary's previous rejection of such a possibility.
“"It is a fallacious argument because the Correos building and the City Hall are only a few hundred meters apart."
The spokesperson has described the local administration's justifications for leasing the postal office as absurd, especially that of revitalizing the center of Jaén, given the proximity between both properties. It is feared that, once the workers are relocated, this will be used as a pretext for the sale of the consistorial palace.
The City Hall, located in Plaza de Santa María, has sufficient space for its departments, although the need for a possible restoration is acknowledged. The Urban Planning Management would also see its employees transferred to the Correos headquarters. The opposition warns that both properties, of great heritage value, would be left unused due to a decision they consider a “whim” with a high cost for citizens.
The local administration has announced an investment of 6 million euros to adapt the central Correos headquarters. For the Popular Group, this exorbitant figure demonstrates the poor state of the infrastructure and represents a waste of municipal funds, especially since it is a lease and not an acquisition. The party insists on the need to allocate these resources to projects that benefit the capital's neighborhoods, instead of investing them in a building that will not be municipal property.
