The party's spokesperson, Agustín González, indicated that the mayor's haste to lease the Correos headquarters might be connected to an intention to convert the City Hall property into a luxury hotel. This hypothesis arises even though the municipal plenary has already voted against such a sale.
“"It is the only possible explanation."
González described the mayor's justifications for leasing the postal office as “absurd,” particularly the claim of revitalizing Jaén's city center, arguing that both buildings are only a few meters apart. According to the spokesperson, relocating city hall employees to the Correos building could serve as a perfect excuse for selling the City Hall.
Although the plenary rejected this possibility through a PP motion, the mayor left open the option of resuming negotiations. The city hall palace, despite needing restoration, has sufficient space for its departments, as does the Urban Planning Management, whose employees would also be moved.
“"Both properties, of great heritage value, would be left unused due to a mayor's whim that will cost us dearly."
The mayor has announced an investment of nearly 6 million euros for the renovation of the central Correos headquarters. This figure, which Agustín González claims highlights the poor state of the infrastructure, represents a “waste” of municipal funds, as the City Council is only leasing the building instead of acquiring it.
The PP has repeatedly requested information on the actual costs of the leasing operation but has not received the required documentation. The party proposes that the money be allocated to projects demanded by the city's neighborhoods, rather than investing in a building not owned by the municipality.
