The Citizen Platform in Defense of the University of Jaén organized a crucial meeting during the regional pre-campaign, where the future and funding of the institution were discussed. The event featured representatives from Por Andalucía, the Popular Party, the PSOE, and Jaén Merece Más, who presented their positions on the academic situation.
During the debate, moderated by journalist Antonio Garrido, concerns were raised about the funding deficit that the university has faced for years. Participants agreed on the fundamental role of the University of Jaén as a driver of development, social cohesion, and equal opportunities in the region.
“"Not a single euro can be lost. The University of Jaén is in danger."
The university's financial situation and the management of the Junta de Andalucía were the main points of disagreement. While some parties criticized the current model and warned about the risk to the institution, others defended the management of the Andalusian Government, assuring a budget increase and a commitment to cover the deficit.
Another point of contention was the rise of private universities in Andalusia. Some parties denounced a shift in model that weakens public education and favors private institutions, while the Popular Party defended the compatibility of both systems, arguing they generate employment and wealth. Jaén Merece Más adopted an intermediate stance, criticizing the lack of public places that forces students to resort to private options.
The debate concluded with a general call for citizen mobilization and political commitment to the University of Jaén, in an atmosphere of disagreement but also consensus on the strategic importance of the institution for the province.
