The traditional Thursday market in Jaén will change its location to Paco Manzaneda Street starting April 30. This move, agreed upon by the City Council and street vendors, will last through May and June with the intention of becoming permanent.
This decision stems from a working meeting between the mayor of Jaén, Julio Millán, and representatives of the Association of Street Vendors and Self-Employed Professionals of Jaén (AVAPA). The primary goal was to address improvements benefiting both citizens and the professionals who operate every Thursday in the city.
The relocation, coinciding with the minor fair of the Virgen de la Capilla, will place the market near Avenida de Arjona. The new site aims to minimize inconvenience to residents and improve accessibility via urban transport, thereby benefiting a larger number of citizens.
“
"After an initial lack of coordination in communication, we have provided a swift response to the demands presented by this group, so that they can continue to generate employment and wealth and continue to provide optimal services to Jaén society."
AVAPA representatives, including Antonio Figueroa, Manuel Olías, and Manuel Escobedo, along with Guadalupe Revueltas from the Fundación Secretariado Gitano de Jaén, expressed their satisfaction with the proposal. They highlighted the Government team's willingness to find solutions and the importance of locating markets in urban areas for the benefit of both vendors and customers.
“
"Experience and evidence show that markets within urban centers always work better for vendors and customers, considering that our customers are usually middle-aged or older, and in the case of the new location, it also improves the mobility and urban transport problems we had in the current location."
In addition to the relocation, other topics discussed at the meeting included advice on processing aid for sales drops due to bad weather and exploring alternatives to extend afternoon hours during the summer.
