Residents of the capital city of Jaén are increasingly anticipating the tramways, which are undergoing continuous testing escorted by the Local Police. These trials are part of a pre-operation contract, valued at 647,196 euros, which was divided into two phases: one prior to commercial operation and another for service supervision once operational.
Currently, adjustments are being made to road signaling and emergency command control tests. Beacon detection tests, SAE (Exploitation Aid System) tests, and axle counter functionality tests are also included, as well as the review of traction substations and checks of the onboard antenna and its receivers.
The contract also covers theoretical and practical training for operational staff, including drivers and maintenance technicians. This step is crucial for the system's operability, which has generated significant anticipation in the city.
“"The tests currently underway and those scheduled for the near future aim to make adjustments to road signaling and emergency command control tests."
The award of the operations contract, which concluded a complex administrative process, was formalized on April 7, 2026. This procedure, initiated on January 30, 2025, faced several setbacks, including the exclusion of the first two highest-ranked bids due to documentation issues and unfulfilled requirements. Finally, the UTE Empresa Ruiz y Barraqueiro was selected, with a contract amount of 13.23 million euros, a figure lower than the base tender budget.
This milestone marks a significant advance for the Jaén tramway, a project that has accumulated 15 years of waiting and is expected to enter service throughout 2026, thus fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the citizenry.
