Researchers from the University of Jaén have achieved a significant breakthrough in developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that provide more equitable, transparent, and user-aligned recommendations. This accomplishment is part of the European Fidelity project, a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship funded by the European Union.
This initiative positions the University of Jaén at the international forefront of research in responsible AI and group recommendation systems. The Fidelity project addresses the challenge of integrating fairness, explainability, and trust into AI systems that influence daily decisions, from e-commerce platforms to news and digital service recommendations.
In contrast to opaque models, the project has developed new algorithms and tools that not only generate high-quality recommendations but also explain their suitability and how they ensure balanced treatment for both users and providers. A key advancement has been demonstrating that explainability and algorithmic fairness should not be viewed as separate elements but as complementary dimensions for building truly trustworthy systems.
The international relevance of these findings has been confirmed by their dissemination in highly prestigious scientific forums, such as ACM UMAP, a global benchmark in user modeling and personalization. Studies derived from the project have empirically validated the impact of these new explainable and fair strategies in group recommendation.
Beyond its scientific contribution, Fidelity offers a practical roadmap for developers and technology companies to integrate responsible AI principles into real products. This fosters digital ecosystems where users, groups, and small providers receive more balanced, understandable, and reliable recommendations. The project, funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, solidifies the position of the University of Jaén and the SINBAD 2 group as international leaders in recommendation systems, explainable Artificial Intelligence, and fairness-aware AI.
