Almería University Researchers Win International Award in Geometric Computing

A team from the University of Almería has received the prestigious ‘Geometric Algebra Computing Award 2026’ in Beijing for their innovative work in geometric computing applied to three-phase power grid compensation.

The research group TIC221 (Computing, Optimization and Sensing in Engineering and Energy) from the Higher Technical School of Engineering of the University of Almería has been awarded the ‘Geometric Algebra Computing Award 2026’. This recognition, given for the best computing work at the tenth edition of the AGACSE (Applied Geometric Algebras in Computer Science and Engineering) congress, highlights the international significance of Almería's scientific contributions.
The conference, held at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing from August 24th to 28th, brought together experts from world-renowned institutions. The presence of figures like David Hestenes and a scientific committee including members from universities such as Cambridge and Amsterdam underscores the event's prestige.
The awarded study, titled ‘Geometric Algebra and Darboux Geometry for Three-Phase Power Compensation: A Unified Framework’, addresses a long-standing limitation in the compensation of three-phase power grids. Unlike traditional methods that provided only a global value, the Almería research proposes a unified framework combining geometric algebra with Darboux geometry. This allows for the precise separation and localization of each type of disturbance, optimizing both energy efficiency and the quality of the electrical supply.
The work is the result of a collaboration among six members of the TIC221 group at the UAL: Jorge Ventura Gil, Francisco José Moreno Manzano, Francisco Manuel Arrabal Campos, Julio Gómez López, Francisco Gil, and Alfredo Alcayde. Doctoral student Jorge Ventura Gil was the central figure in the technical development of the research and was responsible for presenting the paper and accepting the award in Beijing.
The University of Almería also played a leading role by coordinating a special session on engineering and power systems at the congress, reinforcing its active role within the international scientific forum.
