This emblematic venue, located at Calle Cardenal Marcelo Spínola 1, was well-known for its abundant servings and the tapas that accompanied each drink, making it a popular meeting point for students and local food enthusiasts. The news of its closure has been confirmed on social media and its Google profile, where it now appears as “temporarily closed,” indicating an indefinite shutdown.
Bar Barranco stood out for its considerably sized portions, such as the famous giant flamenquines, which customers often compared to their arms, or its san jacobo, described as the size of a bible. These characteristics made it an oasis for students on a budget, who could enjoy a full meal without spending much.
Among the tapas offered, which customers could not choose, were chicken wings, hamburgers, and hot dogs, keeping alive the Jaén tradition of accompanying drinks with a substantial bite. Its closure leaves a significant gap in the affordable tapas scene in Jaén's university area.
Some social media comments suggest that the opening of Jaén Plaza Shopping Center in 2023, also near the university campus, might have influenced the situation, drawing young people towards multinational restaurant chains. The disappearance of Bar Barranco prompts reflection on the loss of historic culinary establishments in favor of a more homogenized gastronomic offering.
