The project to adapt the Correos building, located in Jaén, to house municipal offices will entail an expenditure of six million euros for the city council. According to municipal sources, funding will partly come from EDIL funds and will be supplemented by own resources obtained from the patrimonial transfer of Ifeja land, which will contribute 7.3 million euros to municipal coffers, sourced from the Diputación de Jaén.

The 2026 municipal budgets already include an allocation of 3.7 million euros for this purpose. Of this amount, two million will be used for improving the energy efficiency of the property, while 1.7 million will be for necessary reforms to accommodate municipal departments. The total investment figure almost doubles the initial estimate for the rehabilitation of the obsolete building.

While negotiations for the building's lease continue, the municipal Popular Group has repeatedly requested documentation supporting this decision. The relocation will affect 250 public employees currently working at the city council headquarters in Plaza de Santa María, as well as the staff of the Urban Planning Management, located in the Palacio del Capitán Quesada, in the La Merced neighborhood. The opposition denounces the secrecy surrounding this process.

The Government team has expressed its desire for the Correos building to be vacated before the end of the year to begin adaptation works. The goal is to have it available as soon as possible, anticipating the municipal elections in May 2027.

For its part, Correos is still evaluating the possibility of maintaining its central office in Plaza de los Jardinillos, sharing space with the future municipal departments planned there. Despite having closed an office in El Corte Inglés as part of its restructuring plan, the state-owned company seeks to maintain its presence in the city center, also considering renting some of the many vacant premises in the central area of Jaén, without being able to offer a specific date for its future relocation.
