The arrival of May in Almonaster la Real marks the beginning of an explosion of color and songs, deeply rooted among its residents. The five May Crosses are the central axis of this celebration, which activates the festive calendar with special energy.
The town is divided into two major brotherhoods: the Cruz del Llano and the Cruz de la Fuente. Both have been declared of Ethnological Interest and included in the General Catalog of Andalusian Heritage Assets. Their historical rivalry, far from weakening the festival, has driven it, turning it into a motor of continuity and constant renewal. This sentiment, passed down through generations, contributes to enhancing the celebration and keeping alive a tradition essential to local identity.
“"The rivalry between the brotherhoods is not a confrontation, but an impulse to preserve tradition in its maximum expression."
The festive spirit of the May Crosses is not limited to the main nucleus of Almonaster la Real, but also extends to the villages of Aguafría, Las Veredas, and Calabazares. Each one contributes its own nuances, unique rituals, and folkloric expressions that enrich the overall celebration.
The festive calendar extends for more than a month. The Cruz de Aguafría is celebrated on the last weekend of April, the Cruz del Hoyo de Las Veredas on the second weekend of May, and the Cruz de los Olivos de Calabazares on the last weekend of May, thus closing the municipality's cross cycle.
