The UGT union has warned of a concerning 12.93% rise in workplace accidents in the province of Huelva during the first quarter of 2026, placing the region at the forefront of accidents in Andalusia.

According to data from the Junta de Andalucía's Labor Accident Bulletin, 1,755 work accidents with sick leave were registered between January and March 2026, compared to 1,554 in the same period of 2025. This 12.93% increase is the highest in all of Andalusia and significantly exceeds the regional average.
The general secretary of UGT Huelva, Francisco Gutiérrez, stated that the province maintains the highest incidence rate in Andalusia, with 219.86 accidents per 100,000 workers, surpassing the regional average (209.32). "A 12.93% increase in accidents is not only unacceptable: it is clear proof that the preventive system is failing spectacularly," he affirmed.
Gutiérrez attributes this worsening situation to precariousness, temporary contracts, and the lack of effective control in key sectors such as agriculture and construction. He highlighted that 40% of work-related deaths are linked to heart attacks and strokes in the workplace, calling it a "silent epidemic".
The report details 1,755 accidents with sick leave (+12.93%), of which 1,533 occurred during working hours (+12.56%) and 222 in itinere (+15.63%). Serious accidents decreased by 50% (from 12 to 6), while fatal accidents remained at 2, the same as in 2025. The agricultural sector is the most affected with 444 accidents, followed by services (684) and construction (195), the latter with the highest incidence rate.
The incidence rate in Huelva (219.86) exceeds the Andalusian average (209.32) by more than 5%. Compared to the annual data for 2025, the gap is even wider, with Huelva registering 2,935.7 accidents per 100,000 workers compared to the Andalusian average of 2,720.4.
Physical overexertion and psychological trauma continue to cause nearly 3,000 accidents in three months. However, the most alarming figure is that heart attacks, strokes, and other non-traumatic pathologies are the leading cause of work-related deaths in Andalusia, accounting for 13 out of the 28 registered fatalities. In Huelva, 40% of deaths are linked to these conditions, a result of "unbearable work paces, precariousness, and exhausting shifts".
