The incident occurred as the vehicle was crossing the viaduct connecting Ayamonte (Spain) and Castro Marim (Portugal). For reasons yet to be clarified, the driver stopped the truck and fled, prompting intervention from the authorities in the area.
Inside the truck, officers discovered approximately 7,000 liters of gasoline distributed in several canisters. According to Portuguese media, this type of fuel, transported in this manner, is often used to provide logistical support for drug trafficking activities, such as supplying speedboats used by trafficking networks to bring drugs to Spanish and Portuguese coasts.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the origin and destination of the cargo, as well as the exact circumstances of the driver's escape. No arrests have been reported at this time.
The Guadiana International Bridge is a key point for transit and police cooperation between Spain and Portugal, where controls have been intensified to combat drug trafficking.
