Residents and visitors of El Rompido, in the municipality of Cartaya, witnessed an unusual chase on Sunday night. A Civil Guard helicopter pursued a small, suspicious boat that was navigating at high speed through the Piedras River.
The operation, which unfolded shortly before midnight, began in the vicinity of the Piedras River, with some witnesses placing its start near the estuary, by El Portil. The vessel, which appeared to be recreational, moved in darkness, performing evasive maneuvers to avoid other boats anchored in the area.
The chase concluded when the boat ran aground on the beach in front of El Rompido's promenade. Images captured by witnesses show at least two individuals abandoning the vessel and fleeing on foot across the sand towards a nearby pine forest. The Armed Institute's helicopter continued the operation in the area, even landing at the scene.
“"The constant overflight of the helicopter over the area generated considerable expectation among residents and visitors, many of whom were startled awake at that time of night by the noise and presence of the aircraft."
As of now, no official information has been released regarding the operation or its outcome, so it is unknown if any arrests have been made. Although unconfirmed, the nature of the pursuit suggests a possible connection to drug trafficking activities.
On Monday morning, the boat remained stranded on the beach, drawing the curiosity of those walking along El Rompido's promenade, who observed with disbelief the final point of the chase.
