The small hamlet of Las Veredas, part of Almonaster la Real in Huelva, is gearing up to host the Santa Cruz del Hoyo 2026 this weekend, a festival that blends mountain tradition, folklore, and local cuisine.

This event, considered one of the most authentic dates on the Huelva calendar, stands out for its ability to preserve a pure and vibrant celebration, partly due to its relative isolation. Attendees can look forward to a weekend full of activities, including the distinctive "fandango repicao", free stew tastings, and open-air dances that will last until dawn in an enviable natural setting.
The celebration of Santa Cruz del Hoyo is distinguished by its rich folkloric tradition. Over centuries, Las Veredas has safeguarded the "fandango repicao", a variant of the 'fandango crucero' that has developed its own musical identity. This style accompanies the 'serranas' (mountain women), who, dressed in historically valuable costumes, star in iconic moments such as the Tarde de los Ramos (Afternoon of the Branches) and the Salida del Romero (Departure of the Pilgrim).
Gastronomy is another fundamental pillar of this "cultural resistance". The hamlet's hospitality is evident in culinary rituals that foster community. Following the 'migas' night held on Friday, a free popular stew will be offered on Saturday and Sunday, inviting all visitors to share the flavors of the Sierra de Aracena and discover its customs.
The weekend program includes on Saturday, May 9, the decoration of the Cross and the Church, the gathering of 'serranas' at 6:30 PM, and the Salida del Romero at 7:00 PM. The night will culminate with musical performances by Rocío Guerra, the band "Star Bugs Band", and DJ Rumbita Showman. On Sunday, May 10, there will be the Salida del Romero Infantil (Children's Pilgrim Departure), the traditional free stew enlivened by "Cuarto traste", an official mass, and the emotional flag handover ceremony to the new 'mayordomas', concluding with a performance by "Menta y Romero" and another session by DJ Rumbita Showman.
