The Governing Council of the UNED held an ordinary session at the Huelva City Hall, presided over by Mayor Pilar Miranda, with the presence of the President of the Provincial Council, David Toscano, and the Rector of the UNED, Ricardo Mairal, among other authorities. During the meeting, key issues for the center's operation were addressed, including the approval of annual accounts and the budget proposal for 2027.
One of the central points of the meeting was the change of Presidency of the Consortium, which rotates every two years between the City Council and the Provincial Council. On this occasion, the presidency passes from the Huelva City Council to the provincial entity. Mayor Pilar Miranda highlighted the work carried out during the City Council's presidency, emphasizing the council's commitment to higher education as a priority and an investment in the future.
Miranda stressed the role of the UNED as an opportunity for flexible and quality training for thousands of people, promoting equal opportunities for those who work or have other circumstances that prevent them from accessing face-to-face education.
For his part, the President of the Provincial Council of Huelva, David Toscano, underlined that training is a priority for his government and highlighted how the UNED generates employment and future opportunities throughout the province. He detailed that 57% of students are from the province and 43% from the capital, recalling a recent framework agreement for research projects and academic activities.
Rector Ricardo Mairal emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration between the UNED, the City Council, and the Provincial Council, convinced of the value of science and knowledge in building a better future.
Furthermore, a change in the UNED's location was proposed to accommodate new academic projects, such as the implementation of the degree in Artificial Intelligence. The academic offerings of the Huelva campus will be expanded with double degrees such as Economics and Mathematics or Psychology and Criminology.
The Board of Trustees of the Consortium, the highest body of the UNED Associated Center in Huelva, is composed of the UNED, the Provincial Council, and the Huelva City Council. The center offers degrees, master's programs, doctorates, and permanent training, as well as access courses for those over 25 and 45 years old.
