Renfe has announced the launch of a special operation involving 618 bus services to ensure traveler mobility during the planned works by Adif. These works, scheduled between May 29 and June 14, will necessitate a complete reorganization of the province's rail connections.
The alternative plan will primarily affect Media Distancia (medium-distance) services between Seville and Huelva, as well as long-distance connections linking Huelva with Madrid (Alvia and Intercity). The eight daily Media Distancia trains connecting the two Andalusian capitals will be entirely replaced by road transport, covering both direct routes and intermediate stops. Passengers from San Juan del Puerto and Niebla will be transferred by taxi.
The works, which include repairing damage from past storms and expanding sidings, will also impact connections to Madrid. Passengers will travel by train between Madrid and Seville, with the Seville-Huelva leg completed by road via an additional 210 buses, including a stop in La Palma del Condado. The special plan also modifies the last evening train from Madrid on May 28 and the first morning service from Huelva on June 15.
This disruption coincides with a period of high rail travel for the province, shortly after the El Rocío pilgrimage and at the beginning of the summer season. This is not the first time Huelva has faced service cuts; last October, similar works required the scheduling of 70 buses. Previously, in April, Renfe had already blocked ticket sales for this period, anticipating potential interruptions.
The situation highlights the persistent delays in the arrival of the high-speed AVE train to Huelva. Despite ongoing commitments and studies between Spain and Portugal, progress is minimal, with no defined timeline or clear investment commitments. The construction projects for the high-speed line between Huelva and Seville, tendered last December, have an execution period of 36 to 42 months, placing their completion, in the best-case scenario, at the end of 2028. There is a risk that the Environmental Impact Statement could expire in October 2028 if the works have not commenced.
