Eclipse Glasses Sold Out in Huelva Due to High Demand

The fever for the astronomical phenomenon has boosted sales, leaving opticians, manufacturers, and distributors without stock in the province.

The demand for certified glasses to observe this Wednesday's solar eclipse has led to their exhaustion in Huelva, leaving opticians and distributors without stock.

The excitement for the upcoming solar eclipse has caused a widespread sell-out of specialized viewing glasses in Huelva. In recent hours, demand has surged to such an extent that optical establishments, along with manufacturers and distributors, have run out of available units.
Cristina Márquez, owner of the Mirarte optical shop, describes the situation as "brutal" compared to the rest of the summer. Many citizens waited until the last moment to acquire the necessary equipment, compounded by intense media and social media coverage of the phenomenon, which has heightened anticipation.
The demand spans all ages, with inquiries from young people, the elderly, and especially families. "Many grandparents have come with their grandchildren," notes Márquez, adding that some customers requested up to five units at once.
Opticians emphasize the importance of using certified glasses and not conventional sunglasses to prevent retinal damage. The recommendation is to observe the phenomenon in short intervals, lasting 20 to 50 seconds, with breaks in between.
Particular caution is advised for minors, as standard glasses may shift and allow light to enter from the sides. Adult supervision is crucial to ensure the device remains properly fitted. Specialists warn that potential eye injuries, such as blurred vision or distorted straight lines, may appear hours or even days after exposure.
In light of this, some opticians anticipate a potential increase in ophthalmological consultations due to "fear," even if the observation was brief, and ophthalmology services are being reinforced. Solar glasses have been completely sold out, becoming the most sought-after item in Huelva for viewing the eclipse, the first of two astronomical phenomena visible from the province this year.
