The work, scheduled to begin on July 14, will last for four months. The main objective of this intervention is to obtain precise data on the Andalusi era of the fortress, a period for which there is currently little documentary or archaeological information.
One of the researchers' main interests is to determine whether a mosque existed beneath the current Christian church. Although there are only indications so far, confirming this structure would allow for a better understanding of the site's layout before the Castilian conquest of 1330.
The operation also seeks to establish a clearer chronological sequence regarding the castle's construction. Experts aim to clarify whether the current building sits on a renovation of the original structure or if it is a completely different design, in addition to locating the access points to the Torre del Homenaje.
This intervention is part of the master plan for the monument, which includes excavations until next year. During the work, those in charge have invited visitors to approach the area to see the progress of the research firsthand.
