Following the magnitude 5 earthquake with its epicenter in Alhendín, which shook the province of Granada early this morning, the Armilla City Council has implemented measures to provide reassurance to its residents. Public parks, usually closed at night, have been opened, and the Rafael Machado Villar sports complex has been made available to residents.
Many residents, frightened by the tremor, have chosen to gather in squares and open spaces, a scene repeated in other municipalities of the metropolitan area and the capital. The Granada City Council has reported no serious or widespread damage, primarily minor incidents to non-structural elements.
More significant damage in vulnerable buildings is being assessed, but there are no indications of widespread structural damage. The seismic movements appear to be preliminarily related to the same fault zone. The Fire Department has received over 100 calls requesting building inspections, though most reported damages are not structural.
Concern is high, particularly in the southern part of Granada and in municipalities such as Ogíjares, La Zubia, and Armilla. In Las Gabias, a building has been preemptively evacuated due to material damage. The Deputy of Emergencies, Eduardo Martos, confirmed no serious injuries, only some anxiety attacks.
Civil Protection teams and security forces are working in the most affected municipalities. Cornice detachments and visible cracks have been reported in the Albaicín and the center of Granada capital. The Provincial Council of Granada will urgently convene a committee of technicians to assess building damage.
