The spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Granada City Council, Raquel Ruz, highlighted the "serious consequences that the lack of shade and zero climate adaptation" are having on pedestrians and traditional commerce. According to Ruz, some streets become "impassable" during the summer months due to high temperatures, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
Ruz emphasized the importance of San Antón street, a central thoroughfare that still retains its traditional shops and is frequented by thousands of people. She lamented that, despite its recent renovation, the People's Party "has ignored Granada's climatic reality and has foregone shade trees or the installation of awnings."
The PSOE recalled that the situation was already denounced last year, criticizing the "golden opportunity missed" to plant trees or install awnings, as has been requested without success on other streets like Pavaneras and Alhóndiga.
For the socialists, the installation of shading elements is a "necessity" to "guarantee the survival of local businesses during the summer period," which in the capital extends from May to October. Ruz stated that awnings are "absolutely necessary" for residents and visitors to be able to walk and shop in traditional establishments during the central hours of the day.
