The Fábrica del Pilar in Motril, a symbol of industrial sugar heritage, is set to launch a series of innovative activities, ranging from immersive night tours to scientific workshops and the celebration of the 4th Photography Contest.
Madelin Banqueri, the councilor for Industrial Sugar Heritage, has outlined the initiatives aimed at revitalizing the Fábrica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. Among the most notable proposals is “La noche en la fábrica” (Night at the Factory), an immersive experience allowing residents and visitors to explore the industrial setting during evening hours. This activity will run throughout the summer, from June 19 to August 30.
“
"The Fábrica del Pilar will feature lighting and ambient music that will provide visitors with a unique and immersive experience. We will enjoy a space of lights and shadows that we hope will be to the liking of all visitors."
In addition to night experiences, the Fábrica del Pilar will establish itself as a center for scientific dissemination. Educational workshops are planned for students and the general public, aiming to foster research and connect with the history and technology of sugar. The first scientific workshop, led by Professor Carmen Guerra, will take place on April 18 at 11:00 AM at the Sugar Museum.
“
"Our goal is to create a space at the Fábrica del Pilar for research, science, culture, and heritage, working to position this complex as a benchmark in scientific tourism, connecting with history, technology, and knowledge."
The program also includes ongoing activities, such as the sugar cane tasting game, which offers a sensory connection to the origin of the industrial process. Furthermore, the “La fábrica sale a la calle” (The Factory Goes to the Street) initiative, which ran through March and continues in April, has allowed many citizens to take immersive virtual tours of the factory from various locations in Motril.
Finally, the 4th edition of the Industrial Sugar Heritage Photography Contest has been announced. This competition, open to professionals and amateurs, invites participants to capture the essence of Motril's industrial landscape, including elements like chimneys and other architectural buildings. Participants can submit up to three photographs, and the deadline for proposals is May 31, 2026. Full details and rules are available on the websites motril.es and fabricadelpilarmotril.es.
