Micro-graffiti Threatens Granada's Historic Heritage

Phrases written on walls in areas like the Albaicín and Alcaicería cause deterioration and concern among residents and tour guides.

The streets of Albaicín and Alcaicería in Granada have become the canvas for a worrying trend: micro-graffiti, which deteriorates historic heritage and incurs costs for property owners.

The narrow streets of the Albaicín and the commercial nooks of the Alcaicería in Granada are being affected by a growing trend of writing phrases on their walls. This practice, which has become popular, constitutes an infringement against the city's heritage. Those who create these micro-graffiti, often with markers or pens, seem unaware that, in addition to dirtying and deteriorating areas of great historical value, they are committing a crime.

"I compare this to the famous trend of putting a padlock on railings or bridges as a symbol of eternal love. Someone thought of writing on a wall, it appeared on social media, and now everyone wants to do it."

the president of the Association of Heritage Tour Guides of Granada
The Albaicín, a World Heritage Site, has been transformed into an extensive mural of these small inscriptions, severely affecting its aesthetics. This phenomenon is not limited to this neighborhood but is also observed in the city center, in the Alcaicería area, where numerous walls display written phrases. Although some tourists choose less-trafficked places for their actions, others do so in broad daylight and without any discretion.
A business owner on Cuesta de San Gregorio, in the heart of the Albaicín, witnesses tourists writing on the walls almost daily. According to her, this trend is relatively recent, as a few years ago spray-painted graffiti was more common, whereas now pens are used, which is more discreet but equally visually damaging and harmful to heritage. She also laments that she and other merchants are forced to bear the cost of painting walls to remove these markings, which represents a significant expense.
Despite the efforts of cleaning brigades and the presence of surveillance cameras in various areas, micro-graffiti persists in the Albaicín and Alcaicería, among other tourist spots in Granada. The president of the Association of Heritage Tour Guides of Granada emphasizes the difficulty of tackling this problem without turning the city into a state of constant surveillance. For him, the key lies in fostering civic awareness and ensuring that tourists understand that these actions are an attack on heritage, something that must be eradicated urgently and radically.
