The GMASB women's basketball team from Granada is at a decisive point in its season, fighting to maintain its position in Liga Femenina 2. After a year marked by squad restructuring and a scarcity of positive results, the team has managed to string together three consecutive victories, offering hope for salvation. Antonio Gómez Nieto, the club's president, reflects on the difficulties faced and expresses optimism for the future of women's basketball in the city.
“"It has been a complicated season, as it is for all modest clubs. We had to reassemble the team quickly with players from Granada, also university players, and then try to find what we were missing."
Gómez Nieto emphasizes that the season has been a process of learning and sowing for the GMASB project. Despite the challenges in securing corporate support for women's basketball, the president is confident in the progressive advancement and future success of this discipline in Granada. Consolidating the project and remaining in Liga Femenina 2 are primary objectives for the club.
To ensure the continuity of women's basketball in Granada, the club seeks greater institutional backing. Although the Granada City Council, through the Department of Sports and figures like Marifrán Carazo and Jorge Saavedra, has provided support, GMASB considers the involvement of the Junta de Andalucía and the Diputación de Granada essential. The president highlights that, nationally, the club is the fourth in Andalucía, a community with a large population but few women's basketball sports projects, which creates economic challenges, especially regarding travel.

The club defines itself as a youth academy entity, with a solid project based not on illusions but on available realities and resources. This philosophy, according to Gómez Nieto, safeguards the club and ensures its continuity, with the goal of consolidating its position in the category and, in the medium term, aspiring to the Liga Challenge. The aim is for Granada to become a benchmark for young female basketball players, offering them the opportunity to develop their sports and academic careers in the city, leveraging its university character and collaboration with the University of Granada.
Regarding the team's performance, the president attributes the recent upturn to the maturity gained after difficult matches and the strength achieved in their home arena. He also praises the work of coach Roberto Girón, who, despite it being his first experience in national women's basketball, has shown great progress and dedication, keeping the team motivated during this crucial phase of the season.
