The Women in DONES (WiD) collective, comprising women professionals linked to the DONES Program, will honor Sara García Alonso for her exceptional scientific career, commitment to research, and ability to inspire younger generations. The award ceremony will take place on October 9th.
Sara García Alonso, a Doctor of Molecular Cancer Biology and Translational Research from the University of Salamanca, has been conducting her research at the National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) since 2019. There, she participates in projects focused on discovering new treatments for lung and pancreatic cancer. Her scientific career is complemented by an international dimension and outreach activities that have made her a benchmark for bringing science closer to society.
In November 2022, García Alonso made history by being selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) as a member of its Astronaut Reserve, becoming the first Spanish woman to achieve this status. Since then, she has balanced her scientific work and ESA training with extensive outreach efforts, particularly aimed at sparking the interest of girls and young women in science and technology disciplines.
This recognition joins others previously awarded by Women in DONES to prominent figures such as Yolanda Benito, Director General of CIEMAT; Pilar Aranda, former Rector of the University of Granada; Susana Clement, former Acting Head of Broader Approach Department at Fusion for Energy; and researcher Ángela García.
