The Department of Citizen Participation and Maintenance of the Granada City Council has planned a series of actions to improve the cobblestone and traditional paving in 14 streets within the city's historic center. The works, with a total investment of 118,134.78 euros, will be carried out between June 15 and September 7.
According to the Granada council, the plan has been designed in a staggered manner to "minimize the impact on traffic and urban mobility," as each intervention will require temporary traffic closures. The streets affected will be: Verónica de la Magdalena (June 15-22), Pagés (with night work from June 15-17), Tendillas de Santa Paula (June 22-29), Plaza de los Girones (June 29-July 6), Varela (July 6-20), Carnicería (July 20-24), Aljibe de la Gitana and Placeta de la Miga and Pilar Seco street (July 27-August 10), Santa Paula (August 3-17), Santa Isabel la Real (August 10-17), San Jerónimo (August 17-24), Carrera del Darro (August 24-31), and Nueva del Santísimo (August 31-September 7).
The actions will focus on repairing cobblestone pavement and, in some cases, traditional stone paving, aiming to "restore the original condition of streets that are part of Granada's most characteristic urban landscape." The councilor for Citizen Participation and Maintenance, Francis Almohalla, highlighted the importance of keeping these streets, "some of the busiest in the city," in good condition.
Almohalla explained that the choice of summer is due to the need to "minimize inconvenience to residents, businesses, and visitors as much as possible," staggering the work so that the impact is always "punctual and localized." He emphasized that the historic center of Granada experiences an "enormous volume of pedestrian traffic throughout the year," which requires "constant and planned maintenance."
Finally, the councilor concluded that "this investment of almost 120,000 euros is another demonstration of this government team's commitment to the care of public space," especially in "those areas that are part of Granada's identity and image for visitors."
