The North district of Granada is set for a significant urban renewal. The City Council has put out to tender a series of projects valued at over one million euros, aimed at optimizing accessibility, rehabilitating deteriorated areas, and facilitating the movement of citizens in various parts of the neighborhood.
These interventions, part of the Municipal Works Plan 2024-2027, involve an investment of 1,021,720 euros and a completion period of ten months. The works will focus on areas such as Tánger, Vélez de Gomera, Luz Casanova, and Casería de Montijo, as well as the surroundings of Cartuja and several streets in the Periodistas neighborhood.
One of the most significant projects is the creation of a new pedestrian and cycling connection between Casería de Montijo and the Cartuja campus, which will account for almost half of the total investment. This initiative seeks to resolve a historical mobility issue in the area, transforming an existing path into a safe, three-meter-wide route with separate spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, and lighting to ensure nighttime safety.
“"These actions aim to respond to neighborhood demands and improve the daily use of spaces that have needed intervention for years."
Additionally, work will be carried out on Tánger and Vélez de Gomera streets, where pavements and sidewalks will be renewed, and the road layout will be reorganized to more clearly separate vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The small square of Vélez de Gomera will have its cobblestones replaced with a more uniform and accessible paving, and pedestrian areas will be expanded.
The plan also includes the transformation of an undeveloped space in Luz Casanova, currently used as an improvised parking lot, into a new green area of approximately 1,100 square meters, with trees, urban furniture, and resting areas. The goal is to create a more pleasant and shaded environment for residents, reclaiming a degraded space for public use.
Finally, Periodista Pedro Gómez Aparicio and Periodista Rafael García Fernández de Burgos streets, in the Periodistas neighborhood, will also undergo improvements. In the former, currently unpaved, a fully urbanized street will be built with a roadway, sidewalks, parking areas, and trees. In the latter, a single platform will be implemented to facilitate both pedestrian and vehicular traffic and solve water accumulation problems. All works will include new public lighting to enhance safety and improve the daily use of these areas.
