The city of Granada and its metropolitan area have registered over 400 incidents following a magnitude 5 earthquake that occurred early in the morning. The Local Police and Fire Department received a total of 445 calls, with 33 direct interventions by firefighters and 86 incidents still pending resolution. The majority of these responses were due to cracks appearing in homes, building entrances, staircases, and facades across various city streets, including América, Dílar, Constitución, San Antón, Palencia, and Andrés Segovia. There were also reports of falling debris, cornices, and ornamental elements.
The mayor of Granada, Marifrán Carazo, reported several rescues of individuals trapped in elevators and some homes. Minor incidents were recorded in the supply network, including broken pipes, flooding, and a gas leak in a building on Avenida Cádiz. Firefighters also deployed resources in metropolitan area municipalities such as Ogíjares, Armilla, La Zubia, Vegas del Genil, Huétor-Vega, and Churriana de la Vega, carrying out elevator openings, facade inspections, and other technical assessments.
In response to the earthquake, the Granada City Council activated the Civil Protection Territorial Emergency Plan, currently in a pre-emergency phase. The Seismic Risk Plan Advisory Committee, chaired by the vice-president of the Junta de Andalucía, Antonio Sanz, coordinated operational and institutional efforts. The plan's activation is precautionary, as no widespread severe damage has been confirmed, although non-structural damage is being evaluated.
Services from the Fire Department, Local Police, Civil Protection, and the Volunteer Civil Protection Group remain mobilized and in constant coordination with the 112 Andalucía Emergency Center. The City Council's Urban Planning department plans an exhaustive review of over 85 buildings potentially affected. Preliminary inspections have not detected significant structural damage, but technicians will continue assessing the safety of properties and their residents.
Mayor Marifrán Carazo highlighted the voluntary collaboration of 16 architects to bolster inspection tasks and urged citizens to contact their insurers for minor cracks, reserving emergency calls for incidents that could compromise structural integrity. She conveyed a message of calm, commending the speed and professionalism of municipal services and the composure of Granada's residents. She advised vigilance regarding official channels and prudence due to the nature of seismic phenomena.
