Between May 5 and May 27, 2027, the Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport will halt its air operations. This 21-day temporary closure is essential for a major regeneration project on its runway, a tender awarded by Aena with a budget of 19,726,247.63 euros. The entire project is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete.
Runway regeneration is a crucial maintenance activity performed regularly at all airports, given the constant wear and tear on the pavement from aircraft traffic. This complex engineering task has been meticulously planned to ensure optimal operational safety.
The works involve removing the existing pavement and applying a new 2.5-centimeter-thick layer on the runway and its margins. Surface regeneration of the taxiways, which connect the runway to the aircraft parking platform, will also be carried out to enhance their characteristics and structural capacity. The most critical intervention will occur at the runway ends, where the rigid pavement will be demolished and reconstructed with flexible material.
Furthermore, the runway strip will be leveled, a new air taxiway for helicopters will be created, and a hydroseeding treatment will be applied to critical areas of the radio aids. This technique aids in revegetation and soil stabilization against erosion. The entire aeronautical lighting system for the movement area, including the runway, taxiways, and parking platform, will be replaced with LED technology, leading to significantly more efficient energy consumption.
The project will be executed in several phases, prioritizing operational safety and minimizing disruptions. Most of the work will take place at night, between 11:15 PM and 6:30 AM, when the airport is closed. However, interventions in critical areas such as the runway ends and transition zones will necessitate the full 21-day airport closure. During this period, flights will be diverted to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport. This measure has been communicated in advance to airlines and businesses to facilitate the rescheduling of their activities.
