The Provincial Council of Granada has launched a crucial safety initiative for its elderly citizens, distributing 500 smoke detectors in homes of individuals over 65, aiming to prevent domestic fires and ensure a rapid response to emergencies.
This project, part of the provincial policies for vulnerable groups, is the result of coordination between the Emergency Service and the Social Welfare Area of the Provincial Council, and involves collaboration with the 'Cuenta conmigo' program and the Iturri Foundation.
“
"This project reflects the Provincial Council's commitment to the safety of our elderly, bringing resources directly to their homes and anticipating possible emergency situations. Prevention is a fundamental tool in emergency management, and actions like this save lives and offer greater peace of mind to both users and their families."
The distribution of the 500 detectors will be carried out through the 14 basic community social services areas of the province, allocating devices proportionally to the number of beneficiaries of the 'Cuenta conmigo' program in each territory. This program, promoted by the Social Welfare Area, focuses on the comprehensive support and care of elderly people.
“
"It is an example of how public policies can adapt to the real needs of the population, offering practical and effective solutions. We will continue to promote initiatives that strengthen the autonomy and protection of older people, ensuring they can live with greater peace of mind and security in their homes."
The Iturri Foundation has been a fundamental pillar in this initiative, donating the smoke detectors. Claudia Pérez del Blanco, project manager for the Foundation, emphasized the importance of these actions, noting that in 2024, approximately 200 people died in Spain due to fires, 170 of them in homes, highlighting the need for preventive measures, especially in areas with vulnerable populations.
During the project's presentation, identification materials for the 'Cuenta conmigo' program were also delivered to center directors, who will distribute them to municipal professionals. This aims to strengthen trust and closeness with users, ensuring that support staff are properly identified.
