The intervention, part of DORA III, Aena's investment plan for the 2027-2031 period, has an estimated execution time of 20 months. The primary goal is the regeneration of the airfield pavement, an essential maintenance task due to constant wear from air traffic.
Planned works include the removal of the current pavement and the application of a new 2.5-centimeter thick layer on the runway and its margins. Additionally, a superficial regeneration of the taxiways, which connect the runway to the aircraft parking platform, will be carried out to improve their characteristics and structural capacity.
One of the most significant actions will focus on the runway thresholds, where the existing rigid pavement will be demolished and reconstructed with flexible material. Runway strip leveling will also be performed, a new taxiway specifically for helicopters will be enabled, and a hydroseeding treatment will be applied in critical areas of radio aids, a technique to stabilize soil and prevent erosion.
Furthermore, the entire aeronautical surface lighting system for the aircraft movement area (runway, taxiways, and parking platform), as well as the approach system, will be completely modernized. New tube banks, primary and secondary cabling, lights, signs, and regulators will be installed, incorporating LED technology to optimize energy consumption.
The complexity of the work has led Aena to plan its execution in several phases to ensure operational safety and minimize disruptions. Most of the work will be carried out at night, when the airport is closed to air traffic (from 11:15 PM to 6:30 AM).
However, interventions in critical areas, such as runway thresholds and taxiways, will require the total closure of the runway for 21 days. This interruption period is scheduled, in principle, from 11:15 PM on May 5, 2027, to 6:30 AM on May 27, 2027. During this time, air traffic will be diverted to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport.
The decision has been communicated in advance to airlines and companies operating at the airport to facilitate flight rescheduling and activity reorganization. During the three weeks of closure, work will proceed 24 hours a day, ensuring that upon reopening, only tasks that can be performed at night without affecting regular flight schedules remain pending.
