Government Accelerates Duplication of AVE Line to Granada with New Contracts

Adif has awarded an electrification contract worth over 12 million euros and is evaluating bids for the construction of the superstructure.

The Government has intensified efforts to duplicate the AVE line to Granada, with a key electrification contract awarded and bids for the superstructure under evaluation, aiming to commence works this year.

The Railway Infrastructure Administrator (Adif) has made significant progress in the project to duplicate the High-Speed line to Granada. A contract has been awarded for the electrification of a new track section, covering 47.3 kilometers between Archidona and Riofrío, and between Tocón and La Chana. This contract amounts to 12.2 million euros and complements the evaluation of bids for the construction of the superstructure, which has an estimated value of 45.6 million euros.
These administrative advancements aim to finalize pending procedures so that construction can begin this year. The duplication of the track is crucial for increasing AVE frequencies and doubling the current number of railway slots, which currently stands at 26 and is nearing saturation for High-Speed and Medium-Distance traffic.
The successful bidder for the electrification is a UTE formed by EyM Guinovart and Vinaelectric Montajes Eléctricos, the latter based in Fuente Vaqueros. The exact amount of the award is 12,262,607 euros, with an execution period of 30 months, placing its completion in early 2029. However, these works depend on the prior construction of the superstructure, which includes the ballast, sleepers, and rails.
Regarding the superstructure construction contract, Adif has received ten bids and has already completed an assessment. Among the highest-rated are Comsa, with a score of 46.51 and a bid of 20 million euros, and a UTE comprising Azvi, Rover Rail, and Guinovart, with 46.15 points and a competitive bid of 19.6 million. The resolution of this contract is expected in the coming weeks, with an execution period of 20 months.
Despite these developments, the project has accumulated a six-month delay due to a modification in another related contract, specifically in the section between Huétor Tájar and Tocón de Íllora, which still lacks a constructed platform. The completion of the track duplication is contingent upon the conclusion of works on the Loja Bypass.
