Antonio Gómez, president of GmasB, shared with Granada Hoy the vision and challenges of the entity. The club, founded 13 years ago by former members of ACB basketball, was created with the purpose of establishing a solid youth academy structure in a city with a strong basketball tradition. Currently, GmasB has 32 teams, equally divided between male and female, although it has always shown a special dedication to women's basketball.
“"We want all girls in Granada to see that they can play serious basketball without leaving their city."
Women's basketball is a priority for GmasB. The club has seen its players receive scholarships to universities in the United States and compete at a national level. Three years ago, the team achieved promotion to Liga Femenina 2, where they are currently playing their second season, fighting for permanence in a very demanding national category. Matches involve long trips and clashes against teams from various autonomous communities such as Madrid, Catalonia, Canary Islands, and Balearic Islands.
The youth academy is a fundamental pillar for GmasB, which seeks to offer opportunities to young players from Granada in their own region. Furthermore, Granada's status as a university city attracts talent from other provinces, enriching the project. The club also emphasizes the importance of combining studies and sports, having inaugurated a study room in its pavilion to facilitate this balance.
The main challenges for women's basketball in Granada lie in consolidating long-term projects, which require institutional and business support. The dream of Antonio Gómez and the club is to establish themselves in Liga Femenina 2, aspire to promotion to Liga Challenge, and, in the long term, build a powerful entity capable of competing at the highest level, leveraging the existing passion and talent in Granada.
The president called on fans to support the team in this Saturday's crucial match at 7:00 PM at the Fuentenueva pavilion, highlighting the need to back women's basketball and provide role models for young female players in Granada.
