The Music Bandstand in Granada's Paseo del Salón now bears the name of the celebrated orchestra conductor Miguel Ángel Gómez-Martínez. The official naming took place in a ceremony presided over by the city's mayor, Marifrán Carazo, attended by family members, musicians, and institutional representatives.
This tribute holds deep symbolic significance, as it was in this very location that Gómez-Martínez, at just seven years old, conducted the Granada Municipal Music Band for the first time, a milestone that heralded his distinguished career.
Born in Granada in 1949 into a musical family, Miguel Ángel Gómez-Martínez built an international career, conducting prestigious orchestras across Europe, America, and Asia. The city of Granada awarded him its Gold Medal in recognition of his artistic achievements and the prestige he brought to the city's name worldwide.
“"There are tributes that recognize a career, and there are tributes that also bring things full circle. This Music Bandstand is one of those places that are part of Granada's sentimental memory, and it's hard to imagine a more fitting place to bear the name of Miguel Ángel Gómez-Martínez. Many things that defined his life resonate here: music, the city, vocation, and the meeting of generations."
Mayor Carazo emphasized the importance of this recognition, stating, "When a girl or boy walks by this bandstand and reads the name Miguel Ángel Gómez-Martínez, we want them to know that Granada was able to give the world one of the great masters of orchestral conducting, and that this city does not forget those who have proudly carried its name around the world. Cities have an obligation to recognize those who enhance them, and today we fulfill that obligation."
