The Railway Infrastructure Administrator (Adif) has launched a real-time viewer detailing temporary speed limitations across the Spanish railway network. This tool, announced by the company's management, comes after controversy surrounding the closure of a website that compiled network incidents.
In Granada, out of the ten identified restrictions, only three affect the High-Speed (AVE) line. These are located on the mixed-gauge section, urgently adapted during the 2018-2019 works, and reduce speeds to 140 kilometers per hour on very short segments designed for speeds exceeding 250 km/h.
The AVE limitations are found near road overpasses, specifically on the GR-4407 bridge in Loja, in the station neighborhood of Huétor Tájar (GR-4402), and in Villanueva Mesía (GR-4403). A few years ago, Adif tendered works to reinforce the structures of these crossings.
Four of the ten restrictions are located on the conventional Granada-Bobadilla line, which has been out of use since 2015 due to AVE construction. Despite its inactivity, these limitations, dating from their installation, have not been lifted or resolved, and their future dismantling is planned.
The remaining restrictions on the conventional network, which is in use, affect the Granada-Moreda line and the Linares-Baeza-Almería line, with speeds reduced to 60 kilometers per hour on sections suitable for 160 km/h. Despite these limitations, Granada's main railway challenge remains the outdated infrastructure, especially in the so-called “kilometers of shame” on the Loja AVE section.
