This piece, crafted between the late 19th century and early 20th century, is one of the most recognizable items in the Virgin's wardrobe. Made of gilded silver tissue and rich metallic embroidery, it was a donation from the Countess of Paris, Isabel Francisca de Orleans y Borbón.
The Montpensier gown has been present at some of the most transcendental events in Rocío history. The Virgin wore it on June 8, 1919, during her Canonical Coronation, a moment that officially expanded the devotion beyond the village of El Rocío.
Decades later, the ensemble once again took center stage during the visit of Pope Saint John Paul II to the Almonte sanctuary on June 14, 1993. This universal event strengthened the gown's link to grand occasions and the international relevance of Rocío devotion.
In addition to its historical value, the gown holds a unique curiosity that has always drawn attention. There is an old photograph where the Virgin appears dressed as a Shepherdess, with a cape and hat, but still wearing the Montpensier skirt. This singular image illustrates the aesthetic and devotional evolution of the Virgen del Rocío throughout the years.
